Online Stopwatch — Free, Precise, with Lap Timer

May 6, 2026 · 6 min read · TimerPro Team

A free online stopwatch available instantly in your browser — no app download, no account needed. Measure time with millisecond precision, track laps, and use fullscreen mode for any activity that needs accurate timing.

What Is an Online Stopwatch?

An online stopwatch is a digital timing tool that runs in your web browser. It measures elapsed time from the moment you press start, counting upward in hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. Unlike a physical stopwatch, an online version requires no batteries, no carrying, and no risk of losing it.

TimerPro's online stopwatch offers lap tracking, fastest/slowest lap highlighting, fullscreen display, and works completely offline after the first visit — making it one of the most reliable free stopwatch tools available online.

Understanding Lap Times

The lap function records your split time — the elapsed time since the previous lap was recorded. This is essential for activities like swimming, running, or cycling where you need to compare performance across multiple intervals.

TimerPro automatically highlights your fastest lap in green and your slowest lap in red, making it easy to identify where you gained or lost time.

Lap vs Split — What's the Difference?

A lap time is the time taken for a single interval (e.g., one length of a pool). A split time is the cumulative time from the beginning to a specific point. TimerPro shows both — the lap column shows the individual interval, while the total elapsed time shows your cumulative split.

Online Stopwatch vs Phone Stopwatch — Which Is Better?

Your phone has a built-in stopwatch, so why use an online one? Here's when an online stopwatch is the better choice:

Millisecond Precision — When Does It Matter?

Most everyday timing tasks — cooking, studying, workouts — only need second-level precision. But there are situations where milliseconds matter:

TimerPro displays centiseconds (hundredths of a second) by default, giving you the precision you need without visual clutter.

Using the Stopwatch in Fullscreen Mode

Click the fullscreen icon in the top right of the stopwatch panel to expand the timer to fill your entire screen. The display automatically scales to maximum readability. This mode is ideal for:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the stopwatch work when the tab is in the background?

Yes. TimerPro uses the browser's high-resolution performance timer which continues running even when the tab is not active. Your elapsed time will remain accurate even if you switch to another app or minimize the browser.

How many laps can I record?

There is no limit. You can record as many laps as you need — they all appear in a scrollable list below the main timer display.

Can I save my lap times?

You can copy the lap data from the list manually. A dedicated export feature for saving sessions is on our development roadmap for an upcoming update.

Is the stopwatch accurate?

TimerPro uses the browser's built-in performance.now() API which is accurate to approximately 1 millisecond. It is significantly more accurate than a physical kitchen timer or phone alarm and suitable for most measurement tasks.
